Garden City, Kan. –
Severe thunderstorms are expected to roll across eastern Colorado and western Kansas through 10 p.m. CDT Monday, bringing wind gusts up to 85 mph and hail as large as 2 inches in diameter.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for eastern Colorado, western Kansas, and far southwest Nebraska. Thunderstorm clusters are expected to persist into the evening, with strong surface heating and dry air contributing to intense downdrafts capable of damaging winds and large hail.
Areas at greatest risk include Garden City, Goodland, Lamar, and McCook. Travel along U.S. Highways 50, 83, and 287 may be impacted by sudden wind shifts and reduced visibility. Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid non-essential travel, and secure outdoor items ahead of storm arrival. The risk of crop damage and localized power outages is elevated, especially where large hail or stronger wind gusts hit.
This event follows a stretch of warm, unstable conditions typical of early June across the High Plains. Additional warnings may be issued as storm cells intensify and shift eastward.
The severe threat remains in effect until 10 p.m., with updates expected as conditions evolve.
