Goodland, KS – A powerful winter storm is set to impact northeast Colorado, northwest Kansas, and southwest Nebraska beginning Monday evening, bringing blizzard conditions and up to 6 inches of snow.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, KS, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday evening. The storm is expected to bring heavy, wet snow with accumulations ranging from 1 to 6 inches. Strong northerly winds, gusting up to 70 mph, could lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous.
The affected areas include Yuma, Kit Carson, and Cheyenne counties in Colorado; Cheyenne, Rawlins, Sherman, Thomas, Wallace, and Logan counties in Kansas; and Dundy and Hitchcock counties in Nebraska. Cities such as Goodland, Burlington, Colby, and Benkelman are expected to experience the brunt of the storm.
Blizzard conditions could severely impact travel along Interstate 70 in eastern Colorado and northwest Kansas. The National Weather Service warns that blowing snow may place stress on livestock and outdoor animals, increasing the risk of hypothermia for smaller or younger animals.
Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and consider delaying travel plans. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit, including tire chains, booster cables, a flashlight, blankets, extra clothing, and food and water supplies.
Officials advise preparing for potential power outages and limited visibility. Further updates and potential warnings will be issued as the storm approaches.
