Grand Junction, Colo. – Fire danger remains elevated across parts of Colorado today despite slightly cooler temperatures and lighter winds. Localized pockets of critical fire weather conditions are expected, with the greatest risk centered over the southwest portion of the state this afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, southwest Colorado could see gusts of 15 to 25 mph and relative humidity dropping as low as 6 to 12 percent, a combination that can quickly spread any new fire starts. Areas of smoke are also expected, potentially impacting visibility and air quality for residents and travelers.
Communities including Durango, Cortez, and Telluride should remain alert, especially near dry grasslands and forest edges. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to secure equipment that could spark fires. Hikers and campers are advised to avoid open flames and be prepared for shifting smoke conditions.
Fire weather concerns are expected to diminish by late evening, but warm, dry weather will persist into the new week. Additional advisories may be issued if winds increase or humidity drops further.
