Pueblo, CO — Dry air and gusty winds will heighten wildfire risks across southern Colorado Wednesday afternoon, prompting a Fire Weather Watch for the San Luis Valley and parts of Huerfano County.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the alert is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through the evening hours. Forecasters cite low relative humidity and wind gusts as key contributors to the increased fire danger. Wind speeds have not yet been finalized but are expected to exceed typical spring norms for the region.

Cities including Alamosa, Walsenburg, La Veta, and Trinidad fall within the alert area. High temperatures Wednesday are projected to reach the mid-70s in Pueblo and into the upper 70s in eastern plains cities like La Junta and Lamar, adding to drying conditions on the ground.

Local officials advise residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items that could spark fires, and report any signs of wildfire immediately. Those in high-risk areas should also review evacuation plans as a precaution.

The San Luis Valley is no stranger to elevated fire risk during the spring. However, this alert underscores how quickly conditions can change. Further updates are expected as weather patterns evolve.
