Denver, CO – A high-risk avalanche watch is in effect for several mountain regions in Colorado from 5 p.m. Thursday until 5 p.m. Friday, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC).
The affected areas include the Elkhead Mountains, Flat Tops, Grand Mesa, West Elk and Elk Mountains, as well as the northwest San Juan Mountains. The CAIC warns that dangerous avalanche conditions will develop Thursday night and persist through Friday, with the Avalanche Danger level expected to rise to HIGH (Level 4 of 5).
Heavy snowfall and strong winds will contribute to hazardous conditions, making large and destructive avalanches likely. According to the CAIC, natural avalanches are expected, and human-triggered slides will be easily set off as new snow accumulates.
Backcountry travelers are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid avalanche-prone terrain during this period. Those in affected areas should check local avalanche forecasts, carry proper safety equipment, and reconsider travel plans until conditions stabilize.
The Avalanche Watch remains in effect through 5 p.m. Friday. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions evolve.
