Denver, CO – Multiple avalanche warnings are in effect across Colorado as heavy snowfall and strong winds create extremely hazardous conditions in backcountry areas.
According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), the warnings cover several regions, including the Summit County mountains, Berthoud Pass, the West Elk Mountains, and mountain ranges such as the Sawatch Range, Gore Range, and San Juan Mountains. The avalanche danger has been rated as high (Level 4 of 5) due to natural avalanche activity and the ease with which avalanches can be triggered by individuals.
The warnings remain in place through Wednesday evening for many areas and extend to Thursday evening for the West Elk Mountains. Backcountry travel on or beneath slopes steeper than 30 degrees is strongly discouraged. Avalanches are expected to occur naturally, posing a severe threat to recreational activities in affected regions.
The CAIC urges outdoor enthusiasts to avoid avalanche terrain entirely during this period and to consult colorado.gov/avalanche for detailed updates and safety information.
This storm underscores the importance of preparation and caution during winter activities in Colorado’s mountainous areas.
