Denver, CO – A high avalanche danger warning has been issued for the Elkhead and Park Mountains in Colorado, with hazardous conditions expected to last until 5 p.m. Sunday. Officials are urging backcountry travelers to avoid steep slopes due to the heightened risk.
According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, heavy snowfall and strong winds will create dangerous avalanche conditions beginning Saturday night. The warning is classified as Level 4 of 5, meaning large and natural avalanches are likely.
Officials strongly advise against traveling in avalanche-prone areas, particularly on slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Avalanches will be easy to trigger, posing a serious risk to skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers.
Rescue teams warn that backcountry travelers should carry avalanche safety gear, including beacons, probes, and shovels. However, they emphasize that avoiding hazardous terrain is the safest option.
