Des Moines, IA – Wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected across central Iowa Friday night, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), areas including Des Moines, Emmet, Kossuth, and Polk counties will experience winds reaching 35-40 mph overnight. The NWS warns that driving, especially for high-profile vehicles, could be challenging due to strong gusts.

Looking ahead, a Cold Weather Advisory will take effect Saturday night through Sunday morning. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply, with wind chills reaching 20 degrees below zero or colder. Bitter conditions are likely to persist into Monday and Tuesday mornings.

The NWS advises residents to prepare for dangerous cold and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during these times. Individuals are encouraged to check on vulnerable populations and ensure pets have proper shelter.
