Blacksburg, VA – Residents across the Virginia mountains and Piedmont region should brace for a sharp temperature drop tonight, with freezing lows expected before a midweek warm-up.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, clear skies and calm winds tonight will allow temperatures to plunge. Lows are forecast to reach 16-26°F in the mountains and 25-30°F in the Piedmont by early Wednesday morning. This follows a breezy Tuesday, where northwest winds and clearing skies made conditions feel colder despite highs ranging from 37-50°F in higher elevations and 51-58°F across lower terrain.

Frost may develop overnight, particularly in rural and elevated areas, increasing the risk to sensitive vegetation. Residents are encouraged to cover plants and check on outdoor animals. With mainly sunny skies forecast for Wednesday, highs should rebound to a milder range—48-57°F in the mountains and up to 59°F in the Piedmont.

While no winter weather advisories are in effect, drivers should remain alert for potential black ice in shaded areas during the Wednesday morning commute. Seasonal layers and cold-weather precautions remain advised until midday warming sets in.
