Buffalo, NY – Rain, freezing precipitation, and a rapid drop in temperatures are expected to dominate Western and Northern New York’s weather through the end of March, with impacts varying sharply by region.

According to the US National Weather Service in Buffalo, rain began moving into Western New York on Thursday afternoon, with steady precipitation expected through Sunday night. Highs will reach the 40s and 50s today, but colder air in the North Country will lead to periods of freezing rain, especially overnight.

By Saturday, highs will hover in the 30s north and 70s south, deepening the regional split. Freezing rain is expected to continue in the North Country, while southern areas like Buffalo may see mostly rain. Showers will persist into Sunday with continued freezing conditions in the north until late in the day. Thunderstorms are possible across the region Sunday evening, some potentially gusty.

Temperatures will drop again Monday, with morning lows in the 20s and afternoon highs in the low 40s. Breezy conditions and scattered showers are also likely.

Residents should monitor road conditions, especially in the North Country, and prepare for rapidly changing travel conditions. Power outages are possible if ice accumulates or storms intensify.
