Amarillo, TX – Dry and windy weather will raise the risk of wildfires in Amarillo and across the eastern Texas Panhandle today. With gusts reaching up to 40 mph and humidity levels dropping to 10-15%, local authorities are urging residents to use caution with any outdoor activities that could spark a fire, including grilling and using power equipment.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, these conditions are expected to worsen as a cold front moves through the region, creating a critical wildfire threat. Grass and brush across the Panhandle remain very dry, making them highly flammable. Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor fires and report any signs of smoke immediately to local fire departments.

The weather pattern will bring a mix of cold nights and sunny, breezy days through the weekend. Tonight, Amarillo can expect clear skies with temperatures dropping to around 39°F. On Thursday, sunny weather will return with a high near 67°F, followed by another chilly night around 44°F. By Friday, warmer temperatures near 73°F are anticipated, though wind gusts up to 25 mph will continue.

The threat of thunderstorms increases late Friday into Saturday, with a 60% chance of showers potentially impacting roadways, including I-40. Showers are likely to persist through Saturday and into Sunday, providing much-needed moisture that could reduce fire risks. However, high winds and dry air will continue to challenge the area’s fire safety until the weekend.

Residents should remain alert and follow local guidance to reduce the risk of fire. For those traveling or planning outdoor events, checking the latest forecasts and fire conditions is highly recommended.
