New York, NY – A strong cold front moving through the region Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning could bring damaging wind gusts and hazardous marine conditions, according to the National Weather Service in New York.
Forecasters warn that westerly winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts reaching 55 to 65 mph are expected across the New York City metro area, Long Island, and portions of southern Connecticut and New Jersey. The High Wind Watch is in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday through 8 a.m. Thursday, with storm warnings on area waters during the same period.
Officials caution that the winds may down trees and power lines, leading to scattered power outages and hazardous travel, especially for high-profile vehicles and those crossing bridges. Loose outdoor items should be secured ahead of the storm.
A line of scattered to broken showers may also develop Wednesday evening, potentially enhancing wind gusts to severe levels.
Marine conditions will deteriorate rapidly, with waves up to 10–15 feet offshore and 4–8 feet closer to the coast, prompting a marine storm warning for the region.
Residents are urged to prepare for possible outages, stay alert for rapidly changing conditions, and avoid unnecessary travel during the overnight hours.
