Amarillo, Texas – Strong winds and cooler air are sweeping across the Texas Panhandle today as a cold front pushes southeast through the region. Gusts as high as 40 mph are expected in parts of Amarillo, Dalhart, and Guymon, with falling temperatures from the 80s into the 60s across several counties by this afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the front began moving through northwest areas around mid-morning and will reach the southeastern Panhandle by early afternoon. Wind gusts between 30–40 mph are expected to persist through 4 p.m., particularly in Clarendon, Borger, and Dumas. Highs today will vary widely—from the mid-60s in Boise City to the upper 80s near Wellington.
While there’s enough lingering moisture to spark isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, the chance remains low—between 10% and 40% depending on the location. Any storms that do develop may carry lightning as the primary hazard.
Drivers should watch for crosswinds on Highways 287 and 87, and residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items. Conditions will gradually settle tonight, but additional advisories are possible if wind speeds increase again.
