Cleveland, Ohio – A major winter storm is expected to bring prolonged and heavy snowfall to the Cleveland area beginning tonight and continuing through Monday, prompting officials to warn of dangerous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service Cleveland, Winter Storm Warnings are now in effect across all of northern Ohio, including Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. Snow is forecast to begin tonight and persist through Monday, with storm total snowfall of 6 to 12 inches expected across the metro area. Some locations could exceed 12 inches, forecasters said.
The heaviest snow is expected Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening, when snowfall rates may reach 0.75 to 1 inch per hour. These rates could rapidly cover roadways and significantly reduce visibility, making travel increasingly hazardous.
Forecasters said the snow will be light and fluffy, allowing it to accumulate quickly. Winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, may lead to blowing and drifting snow, especially on open roadways and elevated surfaces.
The National Weather Service warned that road conditions are expected to deteriorate sharply on Sunday, potentially becoming treacherous even on major highways. Travel impacts are expected to remain high into Monday as snow continues and temperatures stay cold enough to prevent melting.
Officials urged residents to complete preparations immediately and reconsider Sunday travel plans. The storm is expected to impact commuters, healthcare workers, delivery drivers, and anyone traveling during the peak of the storm.
Snow is forecast to gradually taper late Monday, but lingering impacts may persist due to accumulated snow and cold temperatures.
Residents are advised to monitor forecast updates closely, allow extra travel time if driving is unavoidable, and avoid unnecessary trips during periods of heavy snowfall.
