Springfield, MO – Dense fog continues to blanket parts of central and southwest Missouri this morning, including the I-44 corridor. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 9 a.m., warning drivers of visibility reduced to less than half a mile.
According to the NWS, the advisory impacts major areas, including Springfield, Branson, and Rolla. Holiday travelers are urged to use caution on roadways and keep headlights on low beam. Slower speeds and increased following distances are critical for navigating through fog-laden areas.
The fog is expected to lift by mid-morning, but patchy drizzle may linger through Christmas Day. Highs are forecast to reach 51°F, with northeast winds turning southeast later in the day. Tonight, visibility could again decrease as patchy fog redevelops, especially south of I-44.
Looking ahead, rain chances will rise on Thursday, with heavier precipitation likely Thursday night into Friday morning. Temperatures will peak near 59°F by the weekend, though patchy dense fog may return, creating potential hazards for post-Christmas travel.
Residents planning trips should monitor weather updates and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Widespread flooding is not expected, but rainfall combined with wet ground conditions may cause localized travel disruptions.
For a safe journey, ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies and allow extra time for delays. Stay tuned for updated forecasts as weather patterns evolve into the weekend.
