CHICAGO, Ill. – The Chicago area will shift sharply from mild and breezy midweek conditions to a wintry mix by the weekend, as the coldest air of the season moves in Sunday. Early-week highs near 60°F will tumble into the 30s by late Sunday, bringing a risk for the first snowflakes of fall.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago office, dry weather holds through Thursday with gusts up to 35 mph today and highs in the mid-60s. Clouds increase Thursday night as a cold front approaches, followed by a widespread round of rain Friday that could slow commutes along I-55 and I-90 during the evening.

Forecasters say a second, colder system arrives late Saturday into Sunday, with temperatures falling steadily and precipitation possibly mixing with wet snow overnight. Areas north and west of the city, including McHenry and DeKalb Counties, have the best chance for a brief coating of snow by early Sunday. Wind chills could dip into the 20s near dawn.

Drivers should prepare for slick spots on bridges and elevated roads late this weekend. Residents are urged to secure outdoor decorations, dress in layers, and protect sensitive plants and pets from the season’s first hard chill. The cold pattern looks to persist into early next week before a gradual rebound.
