Chicago, IL – Chilly temperatures will grip Illinois and northwest Indiana through the week, with snow and freezing conditions dominating forecasts. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts light snow, especially across northwest Indiana, starting Wednesday night and continuing into Thursday morning.
According to the NWS, temperatures will drop significantly Wednesday night, with wind chills ranging from 0 to -10°F. Wednesday’s daytime highs will hover between 15°F and 22°F, while nighttime lows are expected to reach single digits.
The weather will briefly warm on Thursday and Friday as temperatures climb to the low 30s, bringing thawing conditions. Snow remains possible Thursday morning, followed by a mix of rain and snow Friday. Forecasters warn that roads east of I-55 could become slick overnight into Saturday.
Another blast of arctic air will return Friday night into Saturday morning. Wind chills could fall as low as -15°F east of I-55. Weekend temperatures will drop sharply, with highs near 15°F and nighttime lows reaching -7°F.
Residents are advised to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and prepare for challenging travel conditions. Local officials recommend checking for updates and preparing vehicles for subzero temperatures.
The NWS also notes that the thaw expected later this week will likely create slush on roadways before freezing conditions return. Drivers should remain cautious as ice could rapidly form.
This week’s weather serves as a reminder to monitor local forecasts and heed safety tips to stay warm and safe during these frigid conditions.
