CHICAGO, Ill. – After a stretch of mild fall weather, northern Illinois is bracing for its first taste of winter this weekend, with rain changing to snow and a major temperature plunge on the way.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, Thursday will stay dry and seasonable before rain develops Thursday night into Friday. Another system arrives late Saturday into Sunday, likely bringing a mix of rain and snow that could transition to all snow by daybreak Sunday, especially north and west of I-39. Lake effect snow showers are then expected to persist into Monday morning before tapering off.

Forecasters warn that the coldest air of the season so far will settle in Sunday through early next week, with highs only in the 30s and lows dipping into the 20s. The shift could create slick roads near the lake and across northwest suburbs, particularly late Saturday night and early Sunday. Motorists are urged to allow extra time and check travel conditions before heading out.

Utility crews and residents should prepare for a sharp temperature drop—protect pipes, plants, and pets, and make sure to have cold-weather gear ready. The National Weather Service notes this pattern marks the area’s first potential for accumulating snow and a clear signal that winter is arriving early this November.
