Chicago, Illinois – Periods of wintry weather over the next 36 hours are expected to impact travel across northern Illinois, with the Friday morning commute shaping up to be the most disruptive.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, scattered snow showers are possible today from mid-morning through early afternoon. Most areas will see little to no accumulation, though brief reductions in visibility may occur along major routes including I-90, I-94, I-88, and I-80.

Late tonight, forecasters note a low chance of freezing drizzle or mist, which could create slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. While the probability remains around 10 percent, any freezing precipitation could lead to isolated icy surfaces before sunrise.

The most impactful period is expected Friday morning, when a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain may affect the region during peak travel hours. The National Weather Service says impacts will be greatest east of I-39, including areas near I-90 toward Chicago, I-88 through the western suburbs, and I-80 across Will County. Snow and sleet accumulations could reach up to 1 inch, with ice accretion up to 0.05 inches.

By Friday afternoon, gusty northwest winds up to 40 mph may accompany scattered snow showers, leading to localized hazardous travel conditions and reduced visibility, particularly near the Fox River Valley and into northwest Indiana.

Additional clipper systems are expected to move through Friday night and Saturday, bringing lake-effect snow to parts of northwestern Indiana. After a chilly Saturday, temperatures are forecast to moderate Sunday and Monday.

Drivers are urged to monitor conditions closely, allow extra travel time, and use caution during the Friday morning commute.
