Chicago, Ill. – Temperatures hovering near 30 degrees early Sunday will create slick patches on untreated roads across northern Illinois, especially during the morning drive along I-90 and I-94.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, March opens with a chilly start, with highs ranging from the lower 30s near Lake Michigan to the upper 30s inland. A 20 percent chance of light snow lingers south of U.S. 24 early Sunday, though accumulation is expected to remain minimal. Cold onshore flow near the lake will keep shoreline communities cooler than inland suburbs through Monday.

Across the Chicago metro, I-90, I-94 and the Kennedy Expressway may see isolated slick spots early Sunday where moisture refreezes. Drivers in DuPage and Lake counties should watch elevated ramps and bridges through 8 a.m. Sunday. Farther south, I-57 toward Kankakee could see brief flurries before skies gradually clear.

Conditions shift Tuesday as showers spread area-wide, with highs climbing into the upper 40s and lower 50s. The highest rain coverage is expected along and south of I-80, including Joliet and northwest Indiana. Wet pavement and reduced visibility may slow traffic during the Tuesday afternoon commute.

By Wednesday, temperatures surge toward 60 degrees inland, though lakeshore neighborhoods remain cooler. Motorists should plan for changing conditions, from early slick spots Sunday to steady rain Tuesday. Additional updates are possible if rain totals increase or midweek timing shifts across the region.
