Chicago, IL – Northern Illinois remains in the grip of a bitterly cold air mass, with dangerous wind chills persisting through Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for much of the region, warning of wind chills between -20°F and -30°F, particularly overnight and during early morning hours.

According to meteorologists, the coldest conditions are expected late Monday night into Tuesday morning, with areas north of I-80 seeing the most severe wind chills. Frostbite is possible within 30 minutes of exposure to bare skin.

The cold weather has also increased the risk of ice jams on rivers, which could cause localized flooding. Residents near the Rock, Fox, and Des Plaines rivers are urged to remain vigilant.

Officials recommend staying indoors when possible and wearing layers, hats, and gloves when venturing outside. Pets should also be kept indoors during the extreme cold. Temperatures will gradually warm into the low 20s by Thursday, offering some relief from the arctic conditions.
