Chicago, Illinois – Hazy skies and poor air quality will linger across Illinois through Tuesday night as wildfire smoke from Canada blankets the region, with showers and thunderstorms likely to follow.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a cold front will move across the state late Tuesday, triggering storms—particularly near the I-39 corridor—before ushering in cooler temperatures and steady rain by Wednesday. Highs will climb into the upper 80s Tuesday before falling to the 60s midweek, with more comfortable conditions expected into Thursday.

The thick smoke has dimmed visibility and may worsen breathing conditions for sensitive groups. Storm activity Tuesday night could bring gusty winds and localized downpours, especially south of Interstate 80. By Wednesday, most of Illinois will see overcast skies and rain, with daytime highs in the low 60s to 70s depending on location.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity, keep windows closed, and monitor local alerts. Rain chances return again Friday, especially near lakeside communities.

Conditions are expected to improve slightly by Thursday afternoon, though additional alerts are possible later in the week.
