Charleston, W.Va. – Thunderstorms will sweep across West Virginia throughout Tuesday as a cold front pushes through the state, bringing the threat of flash flooding and damaging winds just in time for July 1 travel and holiday events.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the front is expected to bring periods of heavy rain and possibly severe thunderstorms across both the lowlands and mountain regions. Damaging wind gusts and localized flash flooding are the primary concerns, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. The front will exit the region by late tonight, paving the way for drier weather midweek.

High temperatures will hover between 79–84°F in the lowlands and 71–76°F in the mountains, with humidity fueling unstable conditions. Cities like Charleston, Huntington, Beckley, and Elkins could see street flooding, downed limbs, and reduced visibility during peak travel hours.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and monitor local alerts. Those in flood-prone areas should move valuables off floors and ensure drains remain clear. Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds.

Storm activity is expected to taper off overnight, with quieter weather likely through the weekend. Additional watches or warnings may be issued later today.
