Charleston, WV – Intense heat and an increasing risk of severe thunderstorms are creating hazardous conditions across Charleston and central West Virginia through 8 p.m. Saturday, putting the region on alert for heat-related illnesses and sudden downpours.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for Charleston, Kanawha County, and neighboring areas until 8 p.m. Saturday, July 26. Temperatures will peak at 93°F, with heat index values soaring close to 100°F. There’s a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms developing this afternoon—storms could bring torrential rain, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning.

Travel on I-64, US-60, and city streets may become hazardous during any downpours, and brief flooding can’t be ruled out in low-lying neighborhoods. The local emergency management office urges residents to limit time outdoors, check on elderly neighbors, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. Outdoor events and youth sports may be delayed or canceled for safety.

Saturday’s heat marks one of Charleston’s hottest days so far this summer, part of a persistent July heatwave across West Virginia. Relief is expected Sunday as temperatures drop, but more scattered storms could follow.

Stay weather-aware—advisories may be extended or upgraded if conditions worsen this evening.
