Charleston, SC – Dangerous heat is expected to grip Charleston and much of the South Carolina Lowcountry Thursday, with heat index values climbing between 107° and 111° from late morning through early evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., warning that hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat-related illnesses.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the advisory covers coastal and inland areas from Hilton Head and Beaufort through Mount Pleasant and North Charleston into the Savannah metro. Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cooler location immediately, and medical help should be called if heat stroke is suspected.
Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop after 5 p.m., potentially offering brief relief in some areas. Storms could bring locally heavy rain but are not expected to provide widespread cooling. Outdoor workers should follow OSHA guidance for heat safety, including limiting time in direct sun during peak hours.
More advisories are possible if extreme heat continues into the weekend, though temperatures may ease slightly by Sunday.
