Springfield, IL – A winter weather advisory remains in effect across central and east-central Illinois, bringing a mix of snow and ice that could create hazardous travel conditions through Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the advisory is in place until 10 a.m. CST Saturday. Affected areas include Springfield, Bloomington, Champaign, Decatur, and surrounding counties. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch are expected.
Officials warn that roads, bridges, and overpasses may become slick and hazardous. Drivers should use caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time for travel. The worst conditions are anticipated overnight into early Saturday.
Counties under the advisory include McLean, Logan, De Witt, Piatt, Champaign, Vermilion, Sangamon, Christian, Macon, Moultrie, Douglas, Coles, Edgar, Shelby, Cumberland, and Clark. Western Illinois counties such as Mason, Menard, Tazewell, Cass, Fulton, Morgan, Schuyler, and Scott are also affected.
