Austin, Texas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across Central Texas overnight, with damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain likely from midnight through 8 a.m. Friday. Cities including Austin, San Antonio, and New Braunfels lie directly in the storm’s projected path.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, the highest storm risk begins after midnight, starting in the Hill Country around Fredericksburg and Georgetown between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m., then shifting southeast toward San Antonio and Pleasanton between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. A Level 2 (Slight) risk zone covers the northern tier, including Burnet and Lampasas, while most of the region remains under a Level 1 (Marginal) threat.

Expect intense bursts of wind, potential hail up to one inch, and rain heavy enough to cause minor flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas. I-35, US 281, and other early morning commuter routes could see slick conditions.

If you’re in the path, charge devices tonight and avoid travel before sunrise. Tie down outdoor items and stay tuned for warnings, especially if you’re in areas near Austin or north of San Antonio.

Storms may linger into early Friday. Additional alerts are possible by sunrise.
