Springfield, Illinois – Scattered storms and cooler-than-average temperatures will linger across central and southeast Illinois through Monday, bringing daily rain chances and limited sun heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered showers and storms are expected to impact southern parts of the region Thursday afternoon and evening, with storm coverage ranging from 40–60% Thursday and gradually tapering to 15–30% by Monday. Highs will remain in the mid-70s to low 80s, several degrees below the June norm.
Showers could affect areas from Decatur to Mattoon Thursday and Friday, with isolated downpours possible along I-70 near Effingham through Saturday. Sunday offers the warmest day, with highs pushing into the mid-80s, especially in southeast counties, though brief afternoon storms remain possible.
Drivers should prepare for wet pavement and reduced visibility, particularly in the afternoons. Residents are urged to monitor forecasts and avoid outdoor plans during peak storm hours. It’s also a good time to clear drains and charge devices in case of isolated outages.
Rain chances continue early next week, with drier skies likely returning by Tuesday.
