Binghamton, NY – Lake effect snow will return to central New York Sunday night, bringing slippery roads and reduced visibility along I-81 and surrounding areas. Forecasters are urging residents to prepare for tricky travel conditions early in the week.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, snow showers will drift into the region Sunday night, with a chance of accumulation through Tuesday morning. A fast-moving clipper system is expected Wednesday, potentially bringing widespread light snow across the area. Temperatures will drop further by the week’s end, with an Arctic air mass delivering highs in the teens and single-digit wind chills by Friday.
Sunday’s high will reach 33°F with mostly sunny skies before clouds increase overnight. Light snow is likely to begin late Sunday into Monday, with snow chances continuing into Tuesday. By Wednesday, forecasters anticipate more widespread snowfall, accompanied by gusty northwest winds that could make travel hazardous.
For those traveling on major routes like I-81 or Route 17, exercise caution, especially during nighttime hours when visibility may worsen. Make sure vehicles are equipped with winter essentials, including ice scrapers, warm clothing, and an emergency kit.
The extended forecast shows frigid temperatures arriving Friday, with daytime highs barely climbing into the 20s and lows plummeting into the teens. Roadways may remain icy through next weekend, especially in areas impacted by lake effect snow.
