Raleigh, North Carolina – Strong to severe storms are expected to sweep through central North Carolina late Tuesday, bringing a risk of damaging winds, hail, and even a brief tornado.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the severe weather window begins around 6 p.m. Tuesday and may extend through 9 a.m. Wednesday. The primary threats include 40 to 60 mph wind gusts, hail up to 1 inch in diameter, and isolated tornadoes—especially overnight.
Communities across the Piedmont, including Greensboro, Durham, Fayetteville, and Rocky Mount, are under a Level 1 (marginal) risk. While the threat is not widespread, any storms that develop could intensify quickly. Overnight timing adds to the danger, as many residents may be asleep when warnings are issued.
Emergency managers urge residents to enable Wireless Emergency Alerts and have NOAA weather radios or apps that can sound overnight alarms. Drivers should avoid travel during severe storm periods and secure outdoor items that could become airborne.
Storms are expected to taper off Wednesday morning, but additional updates or advisories may follow if conditions worsen. Stay weather-aware through the night.
