Binghamton, NY – A powerful lake effect snowstorm is set to unleash over a foot of snow across central New York, bringing dangerous travel conditions and whiteout visibility.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, a Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect from 4 p.m. today until 1 a.m. Saturday for Onondaga, Madison, and Oneida counties. Snowfall rates could exceed two inches per hour, making roads treacherous and nearly impossible to navigate at times.

Forecasters warn that the snow machine will ramp up overnight and continue into Friday, fueled by cold air and strong winds. Travel delays and road closures are likely, with blowing and drifting snow creating additional hazards. Another storm system is expected Saturday into Saturday night, bringing even more widespread snowfall.

Residents should prepare for extreme winter conditions. Officials urge drivers to stay off the roads during peak snowfall and check weather.gov/bgm for real-time updates.
