Hastings, NE – Strong winds capable of producing 55-mph gusts and blowing dust by Sunday morning could make travel hazardous across central Nebraska, following an unusually warm and dry Saturday.
Saturday remains mostly sunny and warm across Adams County with temperatures climbing to around 71°F. Dry air and southeast winds near 25 mph have prompted a Red Flag Warning until 9 p.m., meaning fires could spread rapidly in open fields and grasslands.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, conditions deteriorate overnight as a cold front approaches. Patchy blowing dust may develop before 4 a.m. Sunday, followed by strong northwest winds during the day. A High Wind Watch remains in effect Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with gusts potentially reaching 55 mph.
These winds could create difficult driving conditions along U.S. Highway 6, Highway 281, and Interstate 80 corridors across south-central Nebraska. Blowing dust may reduce visibility in rural areas and open farmland, especially during the morning hours.
Temperatures will also fall sharply Sunday, dropping from the 70s Saturday to the mid-30s by afternoon, with a brief chance of light snow before 10 a.m. Sunday.
Bitter wind chills near -9°F are possible by Sunday night as skies clear and temperatures plunge to around 10°F. Conditions improve Monday with sunshine returning, though breezy northwest winds will continue across the Hastings region.
