Hastings, Nebraska – Strong to severe thunderstorms could sweep into southwestern Nebraska by late Friday, bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail to areas near the Tri-Cities region.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, isolated afternoon storms may begin in the far northwestern counties Friday, with a more organized line of storms developing in the evening. The threat is highest southwest of the Tri-Cities, including Holdrege and Oxford, where severe conditions are possible overnight.

Winds from the southeast will stay between 5 to 10 mph today, but storm-related gusts may exceed safe travel conditions. Saturday will be partly cloudy and hot, with highs reaching the low 90s before another round of evening and nighttime storms could arrive. The pattern repeats on Sunday, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected again after sunset.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, monitor alerts, and avoid travel during storm activity. Keep phones charged and have flashlights ready in case of outages.

Additional storm watches could be issued through the weekend.
