Hastings, Neb. – Residents across central Nebraska should brace for strong to marginally severe storms overnight, with the highest threat between midnight and 6 a.m. Thursday. Wind gusts could reach 50 to 60 mph, posing risks to unsecured outdoor items, trees, and power lines.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the storms will move in from the north, impacting communities along and north of Interstate 80, including Grand Island, Kearney, and York. While the severe risk is marginal, the strength of potential wind gusts means damage is possible even without hail or tornado activity.

Drivers traveling overnight on I-80 or Highways 30 and 281 should be alert for sudden wind shifts and reduced visibility from blowing debris. Residents are advised to secure patio furniture, trash bins, and other loose items before nightfall.

This round of storms will give way to intense heat later in the week, with Friday heat index values exceeding 105° in some areas such as Fullerton, St. Paul, and Loup City.

Warnings remain in effect through early Thursday, with updates expected if storm development intensifies.
