Des Moines, Iowa – Breezy northwest winds will taper off across central Iowa today, making way for mostly sunny skies and pleasant highs in the 60s. Drivers and outdoor workers can expect a calmer, cooler Tuesday before wetter weather moves in midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the dry stretch will be short-lived. Showers and some non-severe thunderstorms are expected to return Wednesday and linger into Thursday, with another round possible on Friday. While severe weather threats remain low, periods of rain and rumbles of thunder could disrupt afternoon commutes and outdoor plans.

Cities including Ames, Marshalltown, and Ottumwa could see scattered downpours beginning late Wednesday morning, continuing into Thursday night. Rain chances will pick back up Friday, particularly in southern and eastern parts of the state. Winds will remain light, and temperatures are expected to stay in the 60s throughout the week.

Residents are encouraged to keep umbrellas handy and avoid waterlogged roads during peak rain hours. Farmers and gardeners should take advantage of today’s dry conditions to prepare for the wetter stretch ahead.

Rain chances taper off by Friday evening, with warmer and drier conditions expected to return for the weekend. Additional weather alerts may be issued as the system develops.
