Des Moines, Iowa – Fire risks are peaking across Iowa this evening as gusty winds and dry conditions combine to support rapid fire spread through 9 p.m., with any spark capable of igniting grassfires within minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday, with south winds gusting between 20 and 25 mph and dry fuels in place. These conditions are especially critical across central and southern Iowa, where open fields and ditches can allow fires to spread quickly.

Overnight, temperatures will fall into the 35 to 42 degree range statewide, with calmer conditions developing. By Sunday afternoon, highs rebound into the upper 60s to mid-70s, including Des Moines, Ames, and Ottumwa, while southwest winds increase again to 20 to 30 mph, maintaining elevated fire risk.

Travelers along I-35 and I-80 should remain alert for reduced visibility near any active burns, while residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and properly dispose of smoking materials.

Warm, dry weather continues into Monday before a shift begins Monday evening, when showers and thunderstorms develop and persist into late week. Additional advisories remain possible as conditions evolve.
