Indianapolis, Indiana – Strong thunderstorms could develop Tuesday evening, bringing the risk of damaging winds and large hail that may impact travel across much of Indiana overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe storms is in place Tuesday evening into the early overnight hours. Storms are expected to develop after 7 p.m., with the greatest threat focused across northern and central Indiana.
Cities including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Kokomo, and Muncie sit within the primary risk zone, where storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles. Frequent lightning and heavy rainfall may also lead to brief localized flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
Major roadways such as I-65, I-70, and I-69 could see reduced visibility and slick conditions during peak storm activity Tuesday night. Northern counties closer to the Michigan border may see a slightly higher concentration of stronger storms.
Residents should secure outdoor items and stay alert for warnings Tuesday evening into the overnight hours. Storms are expected to weaken after midnight, though additional unsettled weather may continue into midweek.
