Champaign, IL – Central Illinois residents should brace for a bitter blast of Arctic air early next week, with lows plummeting to -5°F. Dangerous wind chills will make outdoor conditions hazardous, prompting safety warnings across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop dramatically Sunday night into Monday morning, with highs only reaching the low teens on Monday. Overnight lows of -5°F combined with brisk winds will produce wind chills well below zero, increasing the risk of frostbite within minutes. These freezing conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday, with highs struggling to climb above 15°F.
Before the cold snap, Central Illinois will see milder conditions, with rain likely on Friday evening. This rain may transition to a rain-snow mix overnight as temperatures dip to 27°F. By Saturday, highs will reach 32°F, but icy patches could linger on roadways, including I-57 and US-45 near Champaign.
Residents are urged to prepare now for the Arctic weather by winterizing homes and vehicles, stocking up on essentials, and limiting outdoor activities. Pet owners should bring animals indoors to prevent exposure to life-threatening conditions.
Monitor local forecasts and advisories for updates on school closings or travel restrictions as the cold front nears. Plan for dangerous wind chills and icy roads early next week.
