Champaign, IL – Winter weather is set to return this week across central Illinois, with snow flurries and frigid temperatures expected by Wednesday. Residents preparing for New Year’s Day celebrations should bundle up as conditions take a sharp turn for the colder.
According to the National Weather Service, today will see highs in the 40s before temperatures plummet overnight into the low 20s. Scattered snow flurries are expected Tuesday night into Wednesday, with a chance of accumulating snow arriving Thursday afternoon. Areas near I-74, including Champaign and Peoria, could see snowfall totals of up to two inches by late Thursday evening.
Wednesday’s high will hover around 32°F, but wind gusts up to 26 mph will make conditions feel much colder. By Friday, temperatures are forecast to drop further, with daytime highs in the low 20s and nighttime lows in the single digits. Roads could become hazardous, especially during early morning and evening hours. Drivers should remain cautious on slick surfaces, particularly along major routes like I-74 and I-55.
The frigid weather is expected to persist into the weekend. While Saturday may bring partly sunny skies, another snow system could arrive late in the evening, continuing into Sunday. Officials urge residents to monitor local forecasts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
Plan ahead for the cold by checking heating systems, stocking up on essentials, and limiting time outdoors. For those traveling during the holiday, allow extra time and ensure vehicles are winter-ready.
