Springfield, IL — A period of heavy rain and storms is expected to affect Illinois from today through Saturday, with the heaviest rainfall concentrated in the southeastern part of the state. Flooding risks are particularly high near and south of I-70, including areas around the Little Wabash, Embarras, and Wabash Rivers.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rain totals of 1-2 inches are forecast for areas west of the Illinois River, while totals may reach up to 6 inches in southeastern regions. Flooding is anticipated in urban, low-lying, and poor drainage areas, and flash flooding could occur as storms repeatedly hit the same locations.

A flood watch has been issued for counties near and south of I-70, effective through Saturday night. The NWS warns of potential river flooding in these areas as the storm system continues through the week.

Residents are advised to stay alert for rising waters, avoid flooded roadways, and be prepared for potentially severe weather. The storm system is expected to move eastward by Sunday, with lighter rain expected across the state by then.
