Springfield, Illinois – Thunderstorms will roll through central Illinois starting Sunday and linger through Thursday as a slow-moving cold front stalls over the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the front will bring off-and-on rain and lightning, especially during the afternoons. Storm chances are highest Sunday at 60% in areas like Peoria, Decatur, and Bloomington, dropping slightly through midweek but not disappearing entirely. Drier breaks are possible, but humidity and storm risks return each day.

Temperatures will remain close to typical July levels, ranging from 84°F to 91°F across most central counties. Monday offers the lowest rain chances and slightly less humid air before the storm pattern picks up again Tuesday through Thursday. Cities along I-55 and I-72—including Springfield, Champaign, and Jacksonville—should prepare for possible lightning delays, slick roads, and brief downpours.

Residents are urged to check weather alerts before commuting or scheduling outdoor events. Charge mobile devices and monitor for lightning if planning time outside. While not all areas will see daily rain, isolated storms could cause localized flooding or brief power outages.

Storm chances and muggy heat will persist into Thursday, with updates expected daily from the NWS.
