Central Illinois Weather Alert: Strong Storms With 60 MPH Winds Expected by 9 p.m. Monday

Champaign, Illinois – Strong storms are tracking across central Illinois this evening, bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail to communities near I-72 and I-55. Drivers and residents in Champaign, Springfield, and Decatur should remain indoors through 9 p.m. as severe thunderstorms push southeast.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in effect Monday, June 9, until 9 p.m. for much of central, east-central, and southeastern Illinois. Counties impacted include Champaign, McLean, Piatt, and Vermilion. Spotter activation may be needed through the evening, with storms racing east-southeast at nearly 50 mph.

While the threat eases overnight, drier air moves in by Tuesday, June 10. Expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 79°F and breezy southwest winds up to 16 mph. Wednesday brings a significant warm-up, reaching 86°F with light winds and full sun.

The five-day forecast looks summer-ready across Champaign and surrounding counties:

  • Tuesday, June 10: Mostly sunny, high 79°F, breezy
  • Wednesday, June 11: Sunny, high 86°F
  • Thursday, June 12: Mostly sunny, high 87°F
  • Friday, June 13: 40% chance of afternoon storms, high 85°F
  • Saturday, June 14: Showers and thunderstorms likely, high 83°F

No additional severe weather is expected after tonight. Still, keep an eye on Friday and Saturday for renewed thunderstorm chances.
