Springfield, Ill. – Afternoon storms could spark delays south of I-70 in Central Illinois today, with another round of thunderstorms expected to hit harder by Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered showers will develop after midnight tonight, with widespread rain and thunderstorms likely Friday across much of the region. Daytime highs will stay in the low 80s today before dipping into the 70s by the end of the workweek.
Localized downpours and gusty winds may impact travel on routes like I-72 and U.S. 51 during Friday’s storms. Residents from Decatur to Effingham should monitor conditions closely and secure outdoor items in advance. Flash flooding isn’t expected, but heavy rain in short bursts could reduce visibility during commutes.
Saturday will bring a noticeable cool-down, with highs only reaching the low 60s and skies gradually clearing. Sunday stays dry and sunny with temps climbing back toward 70. Another round of scattered storms may return west of I-55 by Monday.
Storm chances taper off this weekend, but weather alerts remain in effect through Friday. More updates will be issued as the next system approaches early next week.
