Champaign, Illinois – A dense fog has settled across parts of central and southeast Illinois, creating potentially hazardous conditions for Tuesday morning commuters. Drivers could experience visibility of less than one-half mile, significantly increasing the risk of accidents during the early hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. CDT for a wide swath of the state. The advisory includes Piatt, Champaign, Moultrie, Douglas, Coles, Shelby, Cumberland, Effingham, Jasper, Clay, and Richland counties. Cities impacted range from Urbana and Champaign to Mattoon, Charleston, and Effingham.
The low visibility makes travel difficult, especially on rural roads and highways. Officials urge anyone on the road to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra space between vehicles to allow for safe stopping distances. Motorists should anticipate a slower-than-normal commute.
The advisory is set to expire at 9 a.m. as conditions are expected to improve later this morning. Drivers should remain vigilant until the fog has completely lifted.
