Champaign, IL – Central Illinois will experience a stretch of unseasonably warm and sunny weather early this week, but residents should prepare for showers and thunderstorms by Friday. With highs nearing 80° today and Tuesday, now is the time to enjoy the outdoors before wet conditions arrive heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s high in Champaign is expected to reach 79°, under mostly sunny skies. The warmth will continue Tuesday, with highs around 76°. While a light breeze is expected, conditions will remain calm and dry through Thursday.

However, the weather pattern will shift by late Thursday night, bringing a 30-50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Rain is likely to continue into Friday, with scattered storms predicted for the morning hours. Central Illinois could see rainfall amounts over a tenth of an inch, particularly in areas along I-74 and I-57. The showers may lead to slick roads during the Friday morning commute, so drivers are urged to exercise caution.

By Saturday, cooler temperatures will settle in, with highs dropping into the low 60s and partly cloudy skies. For those planning weekend activities, Friday’s rain should taper off by the evening, but be prepared for cooler and cloudier conditions as the weekend progresses.
