Champaign, Illinois – Temperatures across central Illinois are on the rise this week, with storm chances and dangerous heat threatening July 4th plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat indices will surge into the mid-90s Tuesday afternoon, with a renewed climb toward 100°F by Friday and Saturday. Scattered thunderstorms are expected Tuesday evening, especially along I-74 and surrounding counties, with isolated wind gusts and lightning prompting possible spotter activation between 4 and 10 p.m.

Cities including Champaign, Urbana, Decatur, and Springfield could see strong to severe cells this evening. While rainfall will be brief, frequent lightning and isolated wind damage are possible. Motorists and outdoor workers should remain weather-aware and avoid travel during storms. Eastbound storm motion is expected at 30 mph.

Looking ahead, Wednesday and Thursday will remain sunny and dry, but heat continues to build. By Friday, temperatures near 94°F will combine with rising humidity to create hazardous afternoon conditions. Saturday brings a renewed chance for storms, which could complicate July 4th weekend events across the region.
