Springfield, IL – Severe storms are set to impact central Illinois Friday night, with damaging winds exceeding 75 mph, an increased risk of tornadoes, and large hail potential.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, IL, much of the region is now at a Level 4 risk for severe weather. A powerful squall line of thunderstorms will rapidly move across the state, beginning near sunset in west-central Illinois and reaching the Indiana border by midnight. Wind speeds could reach 80 mph, and there is a heightened chance of tornadoes forming within the storm system.
The storm threat will be divided into three areas:
- Area 1 (7-10 p.m.): The western portion of central Illinois, including Quincy and Macomb, will see the first impacts with damaging winds and large hail larger than golf balls.
- Area 2 (9 p.m.-midnight): Cities including Springfield, Lincoln, and Bloomington can expect wind gusts up to 80 mph and potential tornado activity.
- Area 3 (11 p.m.-2 a.m.): Areas near Champaign and Danville will experience severe wind gusts up to 70 mph as the storm moves eastward.
