Springfield, Ill. – Severe storms with damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes could hit parts of Illinois as early as this evening, with another round expected Thursday afternoon and evening—mainly near and south of I-70.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather covers much of central Illinois today, with storms capable of 60+ mph gusts, one-inch hail, and locally heavy rain. Thursday’s risk increases to “slight” (Level 2 of 5) for southeastern counties including Effingham and Vandalia, where more intense storms are expected during peak travel hours.

The main hazards include downed trees, localized flooding, and power outages, especially in rural areas with saturated soil. Motorists along I-55, I-72, and I-70 should use caution and avoid travel during peak storm times. Emergency managers urge residents to secure loose outdoor items and charge electronic devices ahead of any power disruptions.

Rain chances decrease after Friday as a high-pressure system builds in, bringing drier, sunnier weather for the weekend. Additional updates and warnings are likely through Thursday evening.
