Springfield, Ill. – Rain and thunderstorms will move across Illinois this week, with heavy downpours possible by Wednesday and Thursday, potentially bringing more than an inch of rain to parts of the state. While Tuesday looks drier near and north of I-74, storms will pick up again midweek, making travel tricky and raising the risk of localized flooding.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Central Illinois, areas near Bloomington, Peoria, and Galesburg should stay mostly dry through Tuesday night, while cities farther south, like Springfield and Decatur, may see morning showers. Widespread rounds of rain and storms are expected to redevelop late Wednesday into Thursday, with collective rainfall chances hovering around 50-60%.

Travelers on I-55, I-72, and U.S. 51 should be prepared for slick roads and reduced visibility, especially during the morning and evening commutes. Officials recommend securing loose outdoor items, keeping mobile devices charged, and monitoring for updated weather alerts, as some storms could produce heavy rain in short bursts.

Storm chances linger through early Friday, and additional advisories are possible if rainfall rates intensify. Residents should stay weather-aware and check for updates throughout the week.
