Champaign, IL – Spring storms are set to bring several inches of rain to central and east-central Illinois, placing much of the region under a flood watch through Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Flood Watch remains in effect for Champaign, Urbana, Decatur, Taylorville, Springfield, and other cities through 7 a.m. Sunday, with the heaviest rainfall expected Friday afternoon through Saturday night. Counties affected include Christian, Macon, Piatt, Sangamon, Champaign, and Vermilion.
Residents should expect 1 to 4 inches of rain, with potential flash flooding in low-lying areas, near rivers, creeks, and storm drains. Drivers on I-72 and other regional highways should prepare for ponding water and reduced visibility. Showers and thunderstorms will persist into Saturday night before tapering off.
By early Sunday morning, a mix of sleet and rain may develop as colder air moves in, with temperatures dropping into the 30s. Those venturing out early should prepare for slick spots on roads and sidewalks.
